painting

There are many painters and painting companies in your area that are likely chomping at the bit to receive your business. Painting is a tough business with lots of competition. However, like most highly competitive fields there are things that separate the best from the so-so. With painters, one of those things is how well do they prepare? A painter should be enthusiastic about their work, but not so much that they jump right in without making the proper preparations.

Cabinetry Painting and Finishing Preparations

Cabinet painting can take old, scuffed, or otherwise drab designs that may have either come with your home or not aged well and make them into something new and refreshing. Painting your cabinets is not only a great way to spice things up in your home furnishing, but it can save you a lot of money by redesigning perfectly functional cabinets instead of replacing or buying new ones.

One of the most important preparations for repainting and finishing cabinets is masking the area it will take place. Not only masking them but masking them well. A good painting job is partly decided by how thorough the preparations are as this will not only save time in the long run but prevent mistakes.

Things to Check For When Painting a Surface

While mistakes can be made up for, it is far better to avoid them when dealing with paint. Most household paint jobs deal with the interior of the home or objects within it. Whether you are painting the exterior or the interior, these preparatory tips should always be followed and taken into consideration when a job is being done.

Check the Painting Surface for Dirt or Grime

Cleaning counters, surfaces, and other parts of our home are a no-brainer when it comes to doing weekly maintenance. However, many people never really stop to consider that their walls accumulate dirt and debris as well. Mostly in the form of dust, but also sometimes from scrapes and other incidents that pile up over the years.

However, when you’re painting the walls if you want a smooth and consistent coat, it’s best to clean the walls beforehand to prep them for being painted.

Check for Flaws and Fix Them

Holding a light close to the surface can be an extra precaution to finding flaws in the surface that may not have been easily visible, yet will affect the adhesion and look of the paint. These flaws can be things like small chips or pockets, or protrusions on the painting surface. This goes for all kinds of painting, whether it is exterior and interior home painting, or putting finishes on cabinetry and other objects.

Ensure that all Non-Paint Areas are Covered

It seems a simple enough step, but if you’ve painted before you know that the stuff gets…everywhere. Paint droplets and small splatters cannot be avoided, but protecting and covering all unrelated areas can be. At RJM painting we stress the importance of proper masking, protecting surfaces, and covering things like outlets when relevant. Items that will require spray down will be carefully sent to our 600 square foot spray booth. This area is properly ventilated, dust-free environment excellent for getting that perfect finish that you deserve.

Using the Best Quality of Materials

What materials you use for a paint job will determine the longevity of that paint as well as the quality. If you think about preparation as doing more work upfront to prevent having to do extra work later, then paying for the best materials available can actually save you money and headache in the long term. What’s an extra $100-200 upfront if it increases the integrity of the paint by many years?

At RJM Painting, we take our choice of materials and paints very seriously. Many of the primers we use are specialized. The bonding primer we choose to use is a good example; it bonds to the surface after the prep work is complete. Once the primer is cured, we sand again, caulk in gaps, and apply a specialty urethane finish.

One of the chief benefits of urethane is that it does not discolor over time and has excellent water and UV resistance. We have spent a great deal of time putting together a system of products that ensure quality and durability for years to come.
